Senior Farm Hand/Livestock Manager
We’re looking for a capable, hands-on Senior Farm Hand with a livestock background to join our 360 hectare mixed arable and livestock operation, ideally located in Mid-Canterbury between Ashburton, Methven and Rakaia. Working closely alongside the owner, this is a role for someone who enjoys responsibility, takes genuine pride in their stock work, and wants to be an integral part of the farm’s day-to-day running.
While the farm runs a well-established arable programme, the heart of this position lies with livestock. You’ll take a leading role in animal health, feeding, shifting and general husbandry, with the trust and autonomy to use your judgement and experience – particularly when the owner is off-farm. Calm, capable stockmanship and a practical, solutions-focused approach will see you thrive here.
The livestock system finishes approximately 150 heifers and 160 Angus steers, and winters around 2,500 store lambs. This provides plenty of hands-on stock work year-round and suits someone who enjoys being out with animals and seeing the results of good management.
The cropping programme includes cereals, clover, radish, maize and grass seed. You’ll assist with machinery operation during key seasonal periods; however, extensive arable experience isn’t essential. Confidence with stock and strong practical farming skills are the priority.
Key requirements:
- Fluent English
- Minimum three years’ practical farming experience
- Own working dog under good control
- Proven, calm stockmanship
- Sound tractor skills and willingness to assist with arable work
- Strong work ethic, reliability and pride in your work
- Class 2 licence an advantage
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys being hands-on with livestock, is ready to step into greater responsibility, and values working within a traditional, well-run farming business.
For the right candidate, a tidy three-bedroom home with a log burner is available on farm.
Applicants must have NZ residency or a valid NZ working visa. (If you do not have a vlaid NZ work visa your application will not be responded to)
